Jeans tested in McGrath case By Star reporters MORE THAN 50 pairs of jeans are being forensically tested in a bid to find clues as to what happened to missing man Michael McGrath. The Star has learned police have been searching for a specific pair of jeans – a focus of the extensive search of the Kate Valley landfill site in Waipara. Mr McGrath, 49, was wearing blue jeans when he was last seen. The Star understands more than

200 pairs of jeans were recovered from the landfill of which more than 50 will be tested. About 2700 tonnes of rubbish was searched over 70 days. Inquiry head Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney would not discuss the unsolved case when contacted by The Star yesterday, because it was still an “active investigation.” He has also refused to release what the cost of the 165-day-old investigation into Mr McGrath’s disappearance. The Star requested the information under
the Official Information Act. The Star understands forensic tests on the jeans alone will cost between $120,000 and $150,000. Mr McGrath left his Checketts Ave, Halswell, home on May 21 without his mountain bike or his 1994 blue Subaru Legacy. A focus of the police inquiry into Mr McGrath’s disappearance has been David Benbow, a long-time friend. Mr Benbow’s house was subject to a forensic investigation, and Detective Inspector Sweeney has
previously said in the media he was a “person of interest” who needed to be “eliminated” from the inquiry. Mr Benbow, a prison officer at Christchurch Men’s Prison, would not talk to The Star yesterday: “Mate, not interested,” he said. Detective Inspector Sweeney will not say if he is still a person of interest. Mr McGrath and Mr Benbow went to Hillmorton High School together and drank together at a Halswell tavern.

But who is Maddie Collins and her family? Today (pages 14, 15, 16), Maddie and her mum Sarah talk with reporter Bridget Rutherford about their journey. It is a compelling read. Life has all sorts of surprises and for the Collins family that came in late October, 2008. The family had moved from Spreydon to West Melton. Maddie woke up one morning with puffy eyes. The family thought it was an allergic reaction to grass and hay. Fast forward to 2017 and 13-year-old Maddie is fighting for her life. What she had was not an allergic reaction but nephrotic syndrome – a kidney disease which causes the body to excrete too much protein in urine. Her family has been fighting a battle since. A great new life for Buddy From SPCA’s List of Shame to a happy outcome By Bridget Rutherford SEAN TAYLOR was installing an ATM at New World Ferry Rd last year when he saw a black three-legged dog being photographed outside. “I saw him out there where I was inside working and I went over and said to them I’d quite like that dog. They took it with a grain of salt but then said he may be up for adoption in a month,” he said. Buddy the labrador-cross had been living at the SPCA for about a year, and was being photographed as part of a promotion for its annual Cupcake appeal. A year earlier the then fivemonth-old puppy was brutally beaten by his former owner who was later sentenced to 10 months in jail. Buddy’s leg was broken, and he suffered internal bleeding and bruised lungs in the attack which was recorded by neighbours. Buddy later had his left rear leg amputated. It was one of 10 animal abuse, neglect and cruelty cases to make the SPCA’s List of Shame on Tuesday. Mr Taylor, a project manager for MTR, said he and wife Chrissy had talked about adopting a dog. It was Buddy’s eyes and gentle nature that drew them in. “You take one look at his eyes and you see right through him,” Mr Taylor said. Although they knew Buddy was beaten and lost his leg, they avoided the details until his original owner was sentenced.

In Brief CAR PARK COST MEETING A report to decide how much it will cost to use the Lichfield St car park building will be put before city councillors behind closed doors today. The car park will open on November 10. The city council will offer one hour of free parking in the building when it opens, alongside other off-street car parks in the central city. But it has not yet been determined what the charges will be after that. WORK ON MANCHESTER ST Night road work is about to begin on Manchester St between Armagh and Lichfield Sts. The work will take place between 7pm-6am on Sunday and between November 19-23. The road will be resealed and electrical work to upgrade signals at the intersections will be incorporated. The existing south-bound one-way system will remain in place during the day. All work is due to be completed in April.

Dad meets CDHB over son’s death
By Georgia O’ConnorHarding GEOFF BOOTH has met with health authorities over the death of his son – but they have not been able to tell him anything. Mr Booth’s son Liam, 21, died from suspected suicide on October 2, days after he had been treated at Hillmorton Hospital. Mr Booth, who lives in Greendale, has filed a formal complaint with the Canterbury District Health Board, and has now met with some of their key managers. He asked them what had gone wrong. “They went really quiet, all of them. They were upset,” he told The Star. “They can’t tell me anything, and they won’t tell me anything before Christmas. And it is not a quick outcome.” Mr Booth told the managers hospital staff had

wrongly taken Liam’s word he was not going to harm himself. He said the managers replied that that was all they could do. Liam’s body was found in Beckenham Park, close to where he lived.
About three weeks earlier he had threatened to harm himself at Halswell Quarry Park. Police were called and he was taken to Christchurch Hospital. He was discharged and continued receiving outpatient treatment at Hillmorton Hospital. Mr Booth said he was not going to let the matter rest. “We are not going to let this lie, we are going to keep on pushing,” he said. “They certainly know they are at fault and there is no fault from our side. I did everything in my power to keep Liam alive,” Mr Booth said. The CDHB would not discuss the meeting with The Star. He will write to Selwyn MP Amy Adams and newly-elected Minister of Health David Clark. Liam’s death has been referred to the Coroner.

This is not the first time Reid has taken action to try to prevent television shows airing information about his case. In December last year he went to the High Court to try to stop TVNZ broadcasting a show about him. Radio New Zealand reported Reid told the court that a programme they featured on their website and which could be viewed by its audience on demand, contained inaccuracies that could affect his right to a fair trial. He maintains he never raped or killed Miss Agnew and was preparing to take his case to the Court of Appeal. Reid’s wife Davina Reid (formerly Murray), and her lawyer Jeremy Bioletti were contacted for comment without success. The couple controversially married at Auckland Prison in June. Davina Reid is a disgraced lawyer and was representing her now-husband for a time. She lost her legal career after smuggling an iPhone, cigarettes and a lighter to him in 2011 while he was in Mt Eden prison. – NZ Herald

Jim Clemente, an expert in sex crimes, child sexual victimisation and child abduction and homicide, is one of about 30 speakers to appear at a Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse Trust Aotearoa organised conference. The former New York City Law Department prosecutor now delivers speeches across the world. The conference will run from Sunday to next Thursday at Ara Institute of Canterbury. Trust manager and sexual abuse survivor Ken Clearwater said it was estimated one-in-six men have been sexually abused in their childhood. Mr Clearwater said hosting the conference was a major milestone. “When it started, it was a support group in the strictest sense. Today, the trust is a support service, which is developing national standards, policies and guidelines consistent with international best practice.”

Kiwis cheer up injured young fan Billy meets World Cup stars at training run
By Bridget Rutherford BILLY SPIVEY could not pass the ball around with the Kiwis at their training session on Tuesday – but the young fan did chat to his favourite player Shaun Johnson. Billy, 7, broke his femur three weeks ago after crashing his motorbike and has to be in a wheelchair until November 16. That didn’t stop him getting to Linfield Park to meet his idol after the Kiwis open training session for the Rugby League World Cup. “It was cool. He said ‘I hope your leg gets better’,” Billy said. His mother Nicola said she did not tell Billy they were going to the training session until he woke up that morning. “It is a bit tricky purely because he can’t bear weight on his leg.” Ms Spivey said while Billy was

Businessman jailed for tax evasion
A CHRISTCHURCH construction boss has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for tax evasion. John Clancy, director of Hanguk Business Investments, misappropriated nearly $370,000 in tax deductions from his employees’ wages. According to Inland Revenue, Clancy failed to pass on most deductions made from workers’ wages including PAYE tax, KiwiSaver contributions and student loan repayments. The offending occurred over a 12-month period from August 2014 to July 2015. David Udy, IRD group manager of collections said Clancy’s actions showed “utter contempt” for the tax system. “On many occasions there were sufficient funds to pay the PAYE obligations, but he chose not to. About $1.5 million was transferred from Hanguk accounts to the defendant’s other companies during the period of offending,” he said. Hanguk was put into liquidation in 2015 by IRD. Over the past two years, Clancy had been the director of seven companies placed into liquidation – owing a total of $2.2m to IRD.

BDL closes innings on teaching By Julia Evans BRIAN LE Vaillant was in The Sacred Valley of Machu Picchu when he heard a former student shouting his nickname, BDL. The Peruvian ruins were the last place he expected to bump into someone he’d taught, but after 43 years BDL has become a Christ’s College legend. “I was walking through Sydney airport in the last school holidays and I heard someone else yelling out BDL,” he said. Starting at Christ’s in 1974 and now 67, Mr Le Vaillant is retiring. By the end of the week he will watch his last lot of students leave his accounting classroom and begin their exams. He said he’ll miss the boys and his colleagues most. “I’ve had some very good students, I won’t name them individually . . . but some have gone on to do very well in business. Some have gone on to be All Blacks. Some have gone on to play cricket for New Zealand,” Mr Le Vaillant said. He already has big plans for retirement including playing bridge, fishing and travelling with his wife. They haven’t quite settled on

a destination. She wants to go to Morocco, while Mr Le Vaillant fancies a cruise to Amsterdam from Budapest. “For the first time in 44 years, I can get cheap flights not having
to fly during the school holidays,” he said. There are some things about school life he won’t miss. Namely writing reports. But overall, Mr Le Vaillant
will look back on his time with fondness. “If I didn’t enjoy it, I would’ve gone into accounting, which is my trade or I would’ve gone farming,” he said. He grew up on a farm in Rangiora before moving into the city. He enjoyed the job so much he never thought of moving schools. Mr Le Vaillant was a Housemaster at two of the college’s boarding houses for 20 years. That meant living with the boys as well as teaching them. “It was like running a dairy 24/7. There was always something going on,” he said. He was the perfect candidate – a single male. He said not marrying until he was 50 may be the secret to his happy marriage. Life for Mr Le Vaillant at the school was diverse. He said he never got bored between teaching and being a Housemaster, as well as developing his bent for sport. “By being at the college, it let me get involved in rugby. Rugby’s a passion of mine,” he said. Highlights include beating Christchurch Boys’ High School

four years in a row from 1987-90 in the college match when he was master in charge of rugby. “A very staunch Boys’ High supporter came up to me recently and said: ‘I must congratulate you.’ I said what on? Did you mean the water polo or did you mean the tennis? It wasn’t the cricket because that got rained off. Did you mean the hockey? Oh, you meant the rugby. Come to think of it, you haven’t beaten us at anything this year,” he said. •Turn to page 10

As well as rugby, Mr Le Vaillant has been involved in the college’s cricket, rowing and hockey teams. When he was manager of the first XI cricket team, the school won against King’s College from Auckland. “I’ll always remember things like when we first won the Maadi Cup and the first time we won the Rankin Cup,” he said. First winning the rowing cup in 1988, the college has won it nine more times making it the second most successful school in the country behind Wanganui Collegiate School. And it took the hockey title this year, the first time since 1991. There will be a farewell for BDL at the Christchurch RSA on Armagh St next Friday with an open invitation to all current and former Christ’s students, staff and parents. But he’s not sure if anyone’s flying in from Peru.

Jilted lovers head cyberbullying list By Kelly Dennett CHRISTCHURCH has had the most convictions in the country since a controversial law aimed at curbing cyberbullying was put in place. There have been 55 convictions across the country since the Harmful Digital Communications Bill was passed in 2015. Twelve of those were in Christchurch, followed by six in Auckland, six in Nelson and three in Invercargill. The rest were spread across the country’s district courts. Most offenders were jilted lovers enacting revenge. Most recent figures released by the Ministry of Justice show since the bill’s passing, there had been 55 convictions up until the end of June this year, with the majority of people pleading guilty. Between 2015 and 2017, 67 guilty pleas were entered, compared to 18 denials. Diversion and discharges without conviction had been granted in some cases. The Bill passed with just five votes in Parliament against it. Opponents said it had a chilling effect on free speech.

Under the act it became illegal to post material online that deliberately causes serious emotional distress. Those convicted face a fine of up to $50,000 or up to two years’ jail. Retired judge and University of Auckland law academic David Harvey has been researching the figures since the law was enacted, and said the number of subsequent prosecutions was more than anticipated. Although the legislation intended to target cyberbullies or internet ‘trolls’, his research unexpectedly showed most prosecutions involved broken relationships, he said.

The majority of the offences were committed by ex-partners or partners who threatened to publish intimate photos or videos, sent threatening or obscene images or texts, or disclosed the victim’s personal details, he said. “Looking at analysis for motive of offence, it can be seen that a majority of the offences in this data set were committed out of anger/frustration of break-ups and marital breakdowns,” he said. “In most of the cases there has been some connection between offender and victim. “Although the prosecutions could arguably be characterised
as cyberbullying it lacks many of the aspects of the persistence that accompanies traditional cyberbullying or internet trolling,” he said. Netsafe, the agency tasked with receiving and investigating complaints, said since the law was enacted the agency had fielded a rising number of complaints every quarter. Chief executive Martin Cocker agreed the number of convictions was higher than expected, and that the agency had seen a growth in the number of revenge porn cases. Plan to fix city’s gravel car parks

Principal surface water scientist Adrian Meredith said they were still working on identifying those responsible for the instances in the Avon, which were reported on its pollution hotline. “Most people are doing the right thing but – for those that aren’t – we want to ask them to stop this practice,” he said. “We are hoping the public will continue to let us know if they see of people putting detergent or oil in the river, so we can talk to the people involved.” He said it was illegal. Detergents and oil could damage fish gills, reduce their oxygen intake and promote algal blooms, he said.

After the February 22, 2011, earthquake, Government legislation relaxed the rules for temporary car parks operating in the central city so enough spaces were provided. But now, any new or renewed Deon applications Swiggs will need to go through the appropriate resource consent steps. That could include an Environment Canterbury discharge consent for stormwater, vehicle entrance approval, consideration for location, security, lighting, and pedestrian access. It comes as the city council is cracking down on Wilson

Parking and other private operators, asking them to tidy up the sites they operate. Central Ward city councillor Deon Swiggs said the relaxed rules for central city temporary car parks had come to an end. “Under earthquake legislation,
the temporary car park sites didn’t need to comply with resource consent conditions. We’re now saying they will have to.” He said the city council was also working with operators of current car parks to get them
tidied up, which had been working. “It will take a while to get through everything and start to see the changes.” City council transport operations manager Aaron Haymes said they had been working on an action plan to improve the look and feel of temporary car parking to aid the city’s regeneration. He said there had been positive dialogue with Wilson Parking, the main operator of prominent sites, looking at all the car parks it operated. “The action plan is very much a work in progress and more details will be provided as part of a report to be considered by council in early December,” Mr Haymes said. A Wilson Parking spokeswoman said it could not comment on the stricter rules as it was a “work in progress.” She said it was working closely with the city council on resurfacing its sites around Christchurch. “So far we have improved 12 sites and we hope to complete these over summer when the weather is more conducive to maintenance works.”

IT WAS a normal day at the end of October 2008 and the Collins family was preparing to go camping at Okains Bay. But five-year-old Maddie woke up that morning with puffy eyes. Her parents Sarah and Adam didn’t think anything of it. They had just moved to West Melton from Spreydon, wanting a more rural lifestyle. “We thought ‘great, we’ve just moved rural and she’s allergic to grass and hay’,” Mrs MansonCollins said.

They took Maddie to their GP, who said she may have something called nephrotic syndrome – a kidney disease which causes the body to excrete too much protein in urine. “I just said ‘oh, don’t be silly, just give us some antihistamines, we’re going camping tomorrow’. And he said ‘I’m very serious, you need to take her to the hospital now’.” The family didn’t go camping. And they haven’t been since. Since then, the 13-year-old has undergone more than 50 operations, been on life support twice, had both kidneys removed, one failed transplant and undergoes dialysis every night. She has been in hospital more than 300 times – the longest stint was for four months – and travels to Auckland’s Starship Hospital routinely every seven or eight weeks. “I do dialysis 12 hours a night, every night,” Maddie said. “When we go away we don’t typically take the machine, so we

do manual bags – four over the day. It’s annoying because you can’t have sleepovers, unless you want to do manual bags, but I’m not allowed to do it.” Maddie’s parents and a family
friend are the only people who can operate her dialysis machine. They have two generators just in case there is a power cut. The first time Maddie was put on life support was six months
after her diagnosis. She had been on steroids and low-dose chemotherapy drugs, then one night, she woke with a sore tummy and they took her to hospital.

plucky daughter a better life She had spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, where all the fluid around her organs had become infected. After a week in the high dependency unit, Maddie was transferred to the ward. Things were looking up and Mrs Manson-Collins was sent home to get some sleep at 8.30pm. At 11pm, the hospital rang to say they had transferred Maddie back to HDU, but said there was nothing to worry about. Then, at 5.30am, the hospital called again. “They said ‘Sarah get here now, don’t get a coffee, don’t have a shower, just get in the car and get here now’.” The infected fluid had overflowed into Maddie’s lungs. The five-year-old was gasping for breath and transferred to the intensive care unit where she was put on life support. She was transferred to Starship where she stayed on life support for a week. In spite of the set back, the family and doctors were optimistic they could save her kidneys. But in December 2009, Maddie needed a port inserted in her chest so medication could be injected easily.

“I went into recovery to find them resuscitating her,” Mrs Manson-Collins said. She was put back on life support and her kidneys could
not be saved. Six months later, six-year-old Maddie had her first kidney removed. They started the process of getting on the organ donor list.
Both Mr Collins and Mrs Manson-Collins were tested to see if they were matches, prompting another devastating blow for the family 10 days out
from Christmas 2009. Mrs Manson-Collins had to do a routine mammogram as part of the process, which discovered she had breast cancer. “I said to her ‘have you found something’. And she said ‘did you come by yourself?’ And I said ‘did you find something?’ She said ‘yes, you’ve got cancer and it’s really bad.’” Within seven months, Mrs Manson-Collins had a mastectomy and chemotherapy, and Mr Collins donated one of his kidneys to Maddie. “It was pretty rough on our older two children – is mum going to die this year from cancer? Is my sister going to die this year with renal failure?” She said it was hard to juggle treatments, but Maddie’s health came first. Although Mrs MansonCollins has been cleared of cancer, she still has regular oncology appointments. At nine, Maddie finally started school at St Margaret’s College. But they began to see signs that Maddie’s body was rejecting her father’s kidney. She became very unwell and they had to remove it. •Turn to page 16

Are we nearing the end?’ We’re pretty open about dying and death and Maddie’s fully aware of those implications, and that is a reality for us,” Mrs Manson-Collins said. Maddie said she did not like to think about death. But sometimes she had to. When she first had her antibodies tested, there was a two per cent chance of matching anyone in New Zealand. “We realised we wanted more for Maddie, we wanted life. Just to sit here and wait for a kidney is not okay for a child, dialysis isn’t great for a child, it isn’t great for an adult.” They started looking for alternative and visited The John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, United States, which has been looking at new kinds of transplants. But it will cost $750,000. They have raised just under $300,000. Maddie’s siblings Tomas, 21, and Georgia, 19, do not match, but they could take part in a “paired exchange” where they

donate a kidney and Maddie can get an American one. Mrs Manson-Collins said they were “blown away” with the support they had received. “As much as it’s about fundraising for Maddie, it’s also about raising awareness of a lack of organ donation here in New Zealand and what we can do to improve that system.” Maddie’s condition has taken a toll on the family. Mrs Manson-Collins gave up her job as a logistics manager for a national and international race
car team four months after Maddie’s diagnosis. Mr Collins was a race car engineer for Toyota Racing Series and Formula 5000, but has stopped working. “It’s got to the point now we’re just both so exhausted because it’s been going so long. It takes two of us to keep on top of everything,” Mrs Manson-Collins said. “Financially, it’s taken a huge toll. Before Maddie was diagnosed, we were both working, we had a retirement fund and retire-
ment plans. That’s all gone now.” She said Georgia, who works at footwear retailer Hannahs while she decides what to study, and Tomas, an electrician apprentice, had been “amazing” and were very protective of their sister. The family doesn’t have expectations because it is too disappointing if it doesn’t happen. The family suffered a disappointing blow earlier this year when they were offered a bogus $1.5 million pledge to help get Maddie to the US. Maddie hasn’t been to school
in months. She’s been too sick. But she is about to go back for four days a week, with a mix of Southern Health School and St Margaret’s teaching for the “social interaction”. She wants to become a vet and has already been helping out at her local clinic. “We went to the vet to get my cat fixed and as soon as I walked in I thought ‘I really want to work here, it’s so cool.’ One day I asked if I could come and work for a day, I watched surgeries and got a dog’s teeth cleaned, did vaccinations, and I loved it so much, so from then on it started.” She is used to being around animals, they have three labradors, a poodle, cats and her pony Trig, who she recently won the North Loburn Equestrian spring dressage tournament on. Although riding may come with some risks, her parents decided they would not wrap her in “cotton wool”. Maddie wants to help others by raising awareness for her disease and organ donation. “There are people out there who are unfortunate to have this disease and it’s good to help.” •To donate or find out more, visit maddiecollins. co.nz

BROKEN: Vandals have snapped off the walking pole on the Robert Falcon Scott statue less than a month after it was reinstated.

THE CAPTAIN Robert Falcon Scott statue has been vandalised less than a month after it was returned to the central city. It took seven years to repair the earthquake damaged statue of the Antarctic explorer which sits on the corner of Worcester Boulevard and Oxford Tce. But vandals snapped off its walking pole. The thin brass shaft was found broken into two bits in a nearby garden bed by city council staff on Monday. But the round basket fitting at the base of the pole has not been recovered.
“It is possible that whoever vandalised the statue took it as a souvenir or that they tossed it into the river,’’ said Brent Smith, city council acting head of parks. He said it was “disappointing” this had happened less than a month after the statue was reinstated. “Years of work went into repairing the statue after the earthquakes and to have it attacked so mindlessly by vandals is distressing for all those involved in the project and for the Scott family,’’ Mr Smith said. The city council is
determined to get the statue repaired as quickly as possible. But it will once again go behind a wall of scaffolding. “We’ve got finishing work to do on the statue over the next few weeks which is going to require some scaffolding to be erected around the statue. We’re hoping we can reinstate the pole at that point, but that may depend on whether we can find the missing piece,” Mr Smith said. If the missing round basket fitting is found, the pole will have to be re-cast, which could take some time, he said.

Viewpoint Work programme begins IT’S BEEN a week since I was sworn in as a Minister and life has not been the same since. THere have been wall-to-wall meetings with officials getting me up to speed on what is happening in the Christchurch Regeneration, EQC, Science, and Energy areas. THese meetings have reinforced for me just how much work there is for our Government to do. In this past week, as well as learning our way around the new building, we have had two Cabinet meetings. One of the first decisions Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced is stopping foreign speculators buying houses in New Zealand from early next year. Only those who have chosen to make New Zealand their permanent home will be able to buy existing houses. We are committed to putting homeownership back in the reach of hard-working New Zealanders. Locally, I am sifting through the finer details of progress on the previous Government’s commitments to Canterbury. I have asked officials to prioritise advice on how we can speed up the resolution of insurance
and EQC claims and how we can get the anchor projects moving. I am also making sure I meet with as many local people from across the city as possible to hear their views. This is a key priority for me. In-between my Ministerial commitments I have been spending time in Wigram. On Saturday, I met with a group of Hoon Hay locals concerned about safety in their
local neighbourhood. One of my key takeaways from this meeting was on the need for strong community policing – something the Labour-led Government is committed to. On Sunday, I had some time to relax with a lunch to thank the many people who helped out on my campaign. Our work programme for the next three years now begins. As the prime minister said when she was sworn in, ‘we have a responsibility now, to all New Zealanders, to do our very best to achieve the goals of this Government. Viewpoint Honouring disaster obligation AS MAYOR of Christchurch, I was invited to attend the Intelligent Transportation Systems World Congress in Montreal, which coincided with the anniversary sister city visit to Seattle. It was a great opportunity to sit on the stage as a representative of our city, alongside representatives from Montreal, Singapore and Copenhagen, and talk about the opportunity we have to trial new technologies, including electric car-sharing fleets and autonomous vehicles. Due to the timing, I stopped in California for two days, meeting with a couple of Californian businesses and San Francisco Airport about the opportunities that exist to build a direct connection between Christchurch and North America. Also Laurie Johnson, who has visited and researched what has happened in Christchurch over the past few years, arranged for me to meet with mayors and officials representing parts of Sonoma County affected by the recent devastating Northern California fires. I went for a tour through some of the affected areas and it

It’s hard to describe the scale of loss, especially knowing that for many, absolutely nothing could be salvaged from the charred ruins of what were once their homes and neighbourhoods. I shared a number of things I had learned, starting with the words of the head of the Queensland Reconstruction Authority after their floods, who said there was nothing more important than “communication, communication and communication.” I told them that people always have expectations about how long recovery will take and, as we know, it will always take longer. People will also look for leadership. I warned them to be careful of what they promised. I said it was natural to want to reassure people and say ‘everything will be all right’. But
it won’t be . . . not for a very long time. I believe that being the mayor of Christchurch will always carry with it the responsiblility to honour the support that we were given at our time of need. We must always reach out and help others respond to a disaster and prepare for recovery. So many did that for us and we must always honour that obligation. And we must contribute to the global understanding of disaster risk reduction, which embraces every aspect of resilience from the community to the infrastructure we depend on. Veteran prison officer sets herself free
ONE OF New Zealand’s longest serving female prison officers is about to retire. Ellie Williams, a manager at Christchurch Men’s Prison, will end her career after 31 years working in Canterbury prisons. She started in January 1986 at Christchurch Women’s Prison and has worked with hundreds, even thousands, of people on prison sentences over her career to try and ensure they do not return to prison. “I had a friend who was a prison officer and after asking a lot of questions I thought I might be able to make a go of a job with Corrections,” said Ms Williams. “I thought it would be interesting working with people who might be able to be changed in some way for the better, and I liked the idea of working within a close knit team.” She has seen many changes to the prison service over her career. She is now a custodial systems manager. “The way we work in prisons today has its focus on rehabilitation and reducing reoffending as a priority,” said Ms Williams. “There are so many programmes and incentives in place now to help offenders make

positive changes and provide skills to prisoners to assist them to remain offence free when they are released. “Additionally, we are delivering planning well ahead of release for high risk prisoners with input from several agencies to help smooth their transition
back to the community. This goes a long way towards making the community a safer place as well as wrapping more support around the released prisoner.” When she started, women were not allowed to work in men’s prisons. But in 1992, after coming
back from maternity leave, it was accepted that women could work in men’s prisons and many women already were. “I found it challenging and interesting and a full-on learning curve. I loved the job right from the start,” she says. “Initially I was a bit nervous about how I would feel about working with prisoners but it didn’t take long to realise that they are just people, albeit with different mind sets and ways of behaving. “The camaraderie among staff was something I had not encountered to that degree in other jobs before. We were, and are, a tight team who look out for each other. “Things were incredibly different in prisons when I began my career. Probably because of the possible personal risk to staff from some of the prisoners we work with. We were governed by the old Penal Institutions Act 1954 and Penal Institution Regulations 1961. They were simple rules and prisoner rights were much more limited. “Working in a prison is very satisfying and also very heartbreaking,” said Ms Williams. “We have our successes, though, and in many cases,
Corrections staff can be the few people who care about the person’s future within the prison and after prison.” She recalls one inmate who, when he came into prison, communicated in a threatening and aggressive way through gritted teeth. “Well that’s not quite right actually because when he was received he didn’t have any teeth,” she says. He had lost many of his teeth, an eye and had his nose broken when he was attacked with a baseball bat. “He was associated with a gang, was just angry with the world, and didn’t care what he did or who he did it to,” she recalls. “After health staff got him some false teeth and glasses, we spent a lot of time talking to him in a cross services group. We got him to do small tasks, such as drawing pictures and encouraging him to write down his issues rather than reacting aggressively. We discussed these with him regularly to resolve his concerns.” “He was eventually released and moved towns to be with family. His change was, and is, really rewarding.”

Aussie race commentator lands trot trials (New South Wales). I started calling at the trials there and that was the start of 24 years. Is there a race you called that sticks out in your mind as a favourite? Terror to Love’s third cup when he galloped away and it looked like it was over. That will always stick in my mind. The Sydenham Hurdles was the first race I called in New Zealand in 2009 and I’d never called a jumps race before, that will be another I’ll never forget. What about when things go wrong? A fog night at Addington is always fun when you can’t see anything. They put a camera on the back on the mobile and you end up calling most of the race off a monitor and just hope you can see something. Then they pop out of the fog for about the last 100m or 50m at the end. It’s actually good fun, you just have to enjoy it because you can’t see but nobody else can either. It ends up being a bit like a Lotto draw. What about a favourite race meeting? I love Cup Week. Obviously as busy as it is, it’s a wonderful week. Kaikoura Cup is my favourite meeting of the year.
Horse racing commentator Mark McNamara is about to embark on his busiest time of the year – Cup Week. He talks to Gordon Findlater about crossing the Tasman from New South Wales and living the dream in Canterbury You’ve been in Christchurch for a while now. Have you always been based in Weedons? It will be eight and a half years at the end of this year. We arrived in July 2009. We started in Mt Pleasant and rented a place up there for a while and didn’t really know where was where when we first moved to Christchurch. Then we bought a house in Rolleston just prior to the first earthquake. Our current place in Weedons we’ve been in for nearly three years. How long have you been calling races and how did you get into it? I started when I was about 15 and I’m now 39 so it’s been a 24-year whack. I got a job at the equivalent of Trackside in

on his feet in Canterbury Why the Kaikoura Cup? It’s just once a year, it’s laidback. It’s the setting with South Bay in behind and everyone, whether they follow racing or not, seems to know Kaikoura is the place by the blue water. I spent a lot of time at Bathurst as a kid so that will always be special to me as well. Do you get cup day nerves? I try to treat it just like any other race at Addington, even though it’s not. The adrenaline is pumping. It’s a case of just keeping calm and not going off too early and just calling what you see. Personally, for me, I hope I’m happy with the job I do on the race because it’s a long 12 months to wait for it to come back around. Do you own any horses yourself? I’ve got three broodmares here. I own half a broodmare at Rangiora. I just sold a two-year-old to Aussie. I’ve got a yearling here and a trotter down south. So too many. What about outside of racing, what else are you interested in? I watch a lot of rugby league, I’m a massive Sharks fan. Also touch footy on a Tuesday night at West Melton is always good. The Cronulla Sharks NRL
title last year would have been a highlight then? Yes, I never thought I’d see the Sharks win a premiership, so if they never win another one in my lifetime then I’ve already seen more than I thought I would. I’m also lucky with my job, the hours are pretty flexible so I get to spend plenty of time with my kids and mill around at home. I’m pretty much a homebody, as my wife Katie and I are usually home. You have children? What’s life like at home? A boy and a girl. Will turns five next February and Bronte’s two and a half. They’ve got a pony each. There’s four chickens, two adopted roosters that sneak in from down the back, two dogs and a cat. Was it hard making the adjustment to living in Christchurch after moving from Aussie? It was pretty good because the traffic is so much better over here. I know it can still get pretty busy in peak times, but compared to Sydney, it’s a dream to get around. The weather didn’t take too much getting used to because I spent plenty of time growing up in Bathurst. They’ve got pretty similar weather

conditions there – it gets cold in winter and can snow. Over all, I settled in pretty well and Katie was the same. You talk about growing up near Bathurst. Do you like motorsports? No, doesn’t do anything for me. Although, I don’t mind the formula one. I’d love to go to the Monaco Grand Prix, but no, the V8s don’t do anything for me whatsoever. Can you ever see yourself doing anything else; what’s the expiry date on a race caller? As long as we’re doing a good job, it’s basically when we die (laughs). When the lungs give up or when the memory goes be-
cause it’s all done on the memorising of the colours. While the brain’s good, the eyes are strong and you’re calling accurately it’s your job almost for life. I’d imagine it’s a job that requires a lot of research. What do you do leading up to a race meeting? I’ll wander through the stables before the meeting just in case anyone gives me a snippet of information. It might be someone’s birthday or a pronunciation of a horse. I’ve usually done my tips the night before and then it just comes to memorising the colours just before each race. Ideally, I can call the race off memory or without looking at the race book.
What’s your pick for cup day then? It’s Lazarus’ to lose. He’s just too good, he’s the ultimate professional. His preparation has been faultless. Heaven Rocks looks like he could have been a danger but he’s just too goofy. Any other picks for the week? I hope Te Akau Shark takes out the 2000 Guineas on the first day at Riccarton because it’s part owned by Cronulla Sharks captain Paul Gallen. I try not to have too many favourites but I’ll definitely be cheering for him. That must a busy week for you. Do you get much sleep? It’s manic, especially from the Tuesday to the Saturday. You call Addington, go home and go to bed, get up and look at the field for Riccarton on Wednesday, call that, go to bed, then get up and go to Ashburton on the Thursday. It’s the same routine for Addington on Friday and then it’s Riccarton on Saturday. I’ve then got a gallop recap show on Sunday. You know it’s coming and it goes by pretty fast really.

Slowing down? Not for Ruth
‘I wanted to change the world. Make it a better place’ By Sarla Donovan RUTH DYSON turned 60 in August, but the political veteran shows no sign of slowing down. Three days a week she’s in Wellington and, although her stepson lives there and she has a stepdaughter up the coast in Paekakariki, there’s not much opportunity to see them or her five grandchildren – work doesn’t finish until 10pm. She says the time away from her Moncks Bay home is good for her and Martin, her “very tolerant” husband of 32 years. Their house was rebuilt after the February 22, 2011, earthquake and Martin looks after the vegetable gardens, chooks and beehive while she’s away. September’s election saw Ms Dyson increase her majority by more than 5000 votes in the Port Hills electorate she’s held for four terms. And this time around, she’s back in the corridors of power for the first time in nearly a decade, this time as the Government’s chief whip. Like Labour leader and now Prime Minister Jacinda Arden, Ms Dyson’s interest in politics came as a teenager, even though she wasn’t from a political family. Catholic educated, she describes herself as an “army brat” who lived in different military camps around the country. She had to persuade her parents to vote Labour. “I won,” she says with a wry smile. “I’m sure they were National voters before me.” Growing up, she never lacked

ambition. “When I first started school, I remember I was at a Catholic primary school and the teacher said: ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ And I said a rock star or the pope. And to her credit, she never told me that I couldn’t be the pope.” The appeal of politics was idealistic. “I wanted to change the world. Make it a better place. I was involved in anti-mining, antiapartheid, the peace movement, women’s movement – it was the 70s, you had to be. But I didn’t get involved in party politics until I lived on the West Coast in the 80s.” In the end, it was a toss-up between Labour and Values (which later became the Green Party) but with no other Values person on the coast, she ended up joining the
Labour Party in 1979. After working as a campaign organiser for Labour MP Kerry Burke in the 1981 and 1984 elections, a shift north to Wellington followed, helping Fran Wilde with the Homosexual Law Reform Bill. Then, at the 1988 Labour Party conference at the Dunedin Town Hall, she defeated Jim Anderton to win the position of party president at the youthful age of 31. She held the position for the next five years before being elected to Parliament in 1993 in the Lyttelton electorate which later become Banks Peninsula and then Port Hills. She’s now been there for 24 years, one of the longest-serving current MPs, and has held her electorate seat in all but one election (losing to National’s David Carter in 1996.) Being back in Government after nine years on the opposition benches is a “huge opportunity” she said. “Listening to Jacinda on the radio this morning makes me think we’re probably going to be working non-stop for the next three years, because there’s such a big list of things to do.” Ms Dyson concedes she wasn’t anticipating a return to Government three months ago. “If you had asked me then . . . I would have said we’d be spending another term in opposition, watching more destruction.” It’s 18 years since Helen Clark’s Labour Government prised National out of office and the issues facing the new coalition are “not dissimilar,” Ms Dyson says. She identifies housing as something that’s “a lot worse” now than in 1999. “But remember, we’d had a

period of state house sell-offs coming in to office in 99. And Auckland . . . had sold off all their council housing properties. So there was huge pressure for social housing then, (but) it’s substantially worse now.” “I also think, especially here in Christchurch, mental health is in a much worse state. We’d had quite a period of stability, probably from when Jenny Shipley took over from Jim Bolger (in 1997). “Shipley and Helen Clark were on the same page in terms of mental health and were both pretty determined to de-politicise it. It was often called the ‘Cinderella’ of the health system – always the last thing to get done – so I think in 1999 mental health was in better shape, though the health system overall wasn’t. But now, the health system is really under resourced and for me, mental health is the really big issue.” Also not new is the way women politicians get treated. She reckons they still get judged differently to men. “The New Zealand Herald headline that had Jacinda putting a ‘curse’ on the All Blacks – would you have done that to Bill English? Maybe, but I don’t think so. She’s a woman and she’s young. Fran Wilde and Annette King are two of the women that really encouraged me to get involved in politics and they still do, they’re still two of my closest friends.” “When I first went into Parliament, I wouldn’t have been called a political operator, it was more ‘where’s the bathroom, where’s my office’ . . . but I’ve always been interested in how decisions are made and how to influence things, what really makes a difference. “I’ve learned a lot about the political process and how best to influence change. I had five years as president of the party so before I went into Parliament I thought I knew how the place ran, but I didn’t have a clue. You don’t know until you get in there.” “What keeps me there? I can get things done, I can change things for the better. That’s what keeps me there.” So does Ruth Dyson ever forget that she’s an MP? “At this time of the political cycle, no . . . we’ve just been away for the long weekend and – I should have worn a balaclava. I had people coming up to me in a restaurant on Stewart Island saying ‘what’s going to happen?’”

Plant species that attract Janet Wade says garden style, shape and size is not important when it comes to encouraging more of these winged beauties
LURE: When planting flowers for butterflies the more the merrier; the Mexican sunflower has a cluster of nectar-rich, short tubular flowers surrounded by a good landing pad of petals, which are favoured by butterflies; traditional plants, such as poinsettia, often provide more nectar.
BUTTERFLIES SUSTAIN themselves with nectar, which is why the first way to attract them to your garden is with a food source – namely flowers, and the more the merrier. They are not fussy as to colour, but have a preference for short, tubular-shaped flowers that they can sip from easily with their flexible straw-like tongues (probosces), and have broad petals or a cluster of blooms to support them while they feed. There are all sorts of flowers that fit the bill. Some examples are annuals like cosmos, strawflower and zinnia, perennial gaillardia, purple verbena (Verbena bonariensis) and valerian, as well as shrubs such as Viburnum tinus, bottlebrush and native koromiko (Veronica speciosa). Butterflies detect sources of nectar (or host plants) from a long distance away using “smell” – actually, chemoreceptors located on their antennae. Once they get closer they identify the plants by sight then land and “taste” them with chemoreceptors on their feet. Whether the style of your garden is natural and wild, carefully manicured plots or even pots on a balcony is of no consequence to a butterfly, but planting groups with a minimum of three or four of one type of flower or host plant helps it to home in on them. Depending on the species, butterflies overwinter as eggs, caterpillars or chrysalises, or hibernate as adults (sometimes a combination of ways), so while they are most numerous in summer and autumn those that emerge from chrysalises in spring (eg coppers) or come out of hibernation to lay the first eggs of the season (such as monarchs) are well in need of spring flowers. Cineraria, cornflowers, statice and wildflower mixes are a few that can be planted to welcome the early arrivals. Butterflies that hibernate can still be seen flying on sunny winter days and appreciate

a ready source of nectar, too. Marguerite daisies, wallflowers, camellia, calendula and Buddleja auriculata are possibilities here. A good way to judge what to plant is to walk around your local area and look at what is flowering well in the different seasons, then observe which of the flowers prove most popular with your butterfly visitors and increase the number of those. If you want them to stay in your garden rather than just eat and run, the next step is to provide host plants. While the same flowers suit a large range of species each has a different and specific requirement for the plant they lay their eggs on, and some are easier to cater for in the home garden than others. New Zealand has around 23 species of butterfly. Many of the endemic (ie found only NZ) ones, in particular, are confined to small areas, so some research might be needed to see which ones you could potentially attract. The fat, bright yellow, black and white caterpillars of monarch butterflies feed on milkweeds. Swan plant (Gomphocarpus physocarpus) is a readily available and easy
to grow type. New Zealand’s most common butterfly (as its name suggests) is the common blue, but it is easily overlooked because it is a small, grey/blue butterfly that flies close to the ground. Its host plants are legumes, such as clover, lupins and peas. Their caterpillars, which look like tiny, green slugs, feed inside the flower buds and seed pods of their host plant and that is where they form their chrysalises, too. They are less common in our cities than they used to be and one reason for this is the close-cropping of lawns that sees the clover heads cut before the butterfly can complete its life cycle. To bring back these butterflies, plant patches of clover (decorative red and crimson is an option) and raise the level of your lawnmower. The black and white magpie moth has a distinctive caterpillar with a shiny, black body, covered in long fine hairs, with a bright orange stripe running its length. I include the magpie moth here because it is day flying. One of its host plants is cineraria.

which contains Bacillus thuringiensis, is nonselective as well and will kill most other caterpillars along with the intended pest species. Another key criterion for a butterfly garden is to locate it in a sunny, sheltered area. Like other insects, butterflies are cold-blooded and need the warmth of the sun to be able to fly. A good-sized rock or two added to your garden in a sunny spot will absorb the sun’s heat and provide a place to bask, but I must admit the butterflies in my garden seem to prefer my clothesline. Fighting against the wind to feed or lay eggs takes a lot of energy. Strong winds can blow caterpillars off their host plants – they are particularly vulnerable to falling when forming their chrysalises and hatching
out of them – and can cause the wings of newly emerged butterflies to dry crookedly, so it makes sense to site your butterfly plants in a sheltered part of your garden. In the wild, males can be seen drinking at the edge of muddy puddles or damp sand banks. This behaviour is called puddling, which is done to take in sodium and nitrates that are particularly important for reproduction. In the home garden, you can provide for your visitors by making a slurry of mud, sand and animal or chicken manure, and watering it to keep it damp during dry weather. The final feature of the ideal butterfly garden is a tree (at least somewhere in proximity) to provide shelter at night and in wet weather, as well as a place for butterflies to overwinter.

Yellow admiral caterpillars eat all varieties of nettle, both introduced and native, but prefer the exotic variety, Urtica dioica. They feed inside a tent of leaves, sewn together with silk strands, for protection. Our variety of red admiral butterfly is found only in New Zealand. Because its natural habitat is forest and it lays its eggs exclusively on native nettles it is seldom seen in suburban gardens. The host plants for copper butterflies, also endemic, are Muehlenbeckia complexa, M. australis (both of which can become rampant vines) and M. axillaris. The smaller ground cover, M. axillaris, is more manageable in the home garden, but since most copper butterflies don’t fly more than 50m from their host plants, unless there are already coppers in wild habitats or revegetation projects in your area you may not see them. However, all would not be lost because muehlenbeckia provides berries and cover for lizards, too. If you’re lucky you might even attract some of the butterflies like painted ladies or blue moons that blow across from Australia each summer. All caterpillars are voracious eaters, but unlike their parents they can’t travel far to look for food, so the more host plants you plant the better. However, no matter how much you provide, the caterpillars will usually eat more and your choice becomes to let nature take its course or protect some plants with netting to introduce later in the season. Avoid using insecticidal sprays in your garden as these affect butterflies and caterpillars (not to mention bees and other beneficial insects) as much as the pests. Turn on the grill/fan function in the oven. Slice the ciabatta in generous diagonal slices. Grill in the oven, turning once, until the bread is toasted. Remove from the oven and keep warm. Preheat the oven to 170 deg C. Cut the tomatoes in half around the equator and place on an oven tray. Drizzle over the honey, crumbled thyme leaves (stripped from the stalks) and sea salt flakes, then roast the tomatoes in the oven until soft and aromatic – about 25-30min.

History and scenery abounds in Buller SPECTACLE: The magnificent Oparara Arch and the swingbridge which traverses the Kohaihai River.
By Mike Yardley AWAKENING TO the raw soundtrack of crashing ocean breakers and the gentle pitterpatter of a pre-dawn shower, I was up with the seals to strike out along the coastal trail at Cape Foulwind. History runs deep here, as it was where Abel Tasman first dropped anchorage in New Zealand in 1642 and the cape earned its name from the atrocious howling weather that greeted James Cook on his voyage in 1770. It’s also the closest point to Australia. The sweeping panoramas are stupendous. I gazed north along the coastline to the strikingly sculpted cliff-backed beaches at the northern end of the cape. Omau Cliffs, where hard granite intersects with softer mudstone, glow a golden hue in the sunshine. Once nicknamed the Scarborough of New Zealand, they remain a favourite shoreline haunt in the summer. To the east, the inland ancient marine terraces rise up to the Paparoa Ranges, while patches of pakihi were readily conspicuous. On a clear day, Mt Cook serrates the southern skyline, while the Kahurangi National Park rises
up to the north. Scores of weka were nonchalantly grazing in the trackside scrub. Unlike most of New Zealand, Buller is one of the few places where you’ll regularly encounter them. Friendly and flightless, they are fleet-footed. One of them ventured out on to the road just as I was bearing down. I have never seen a bird scramble so frantically, on foot, in a mad mercy dash. The 90min coastal walk from Cape Foulwind to Tauranga Bay passes along the edge of an escarpment, where the granite bluffs serve up monster views of the rugged coastline. Pointing the car north, I ventured up the highway, past
Westport and over the bush-clad heights of the dramatically scenic Karamea Bluff, draped in rimu and matai forests. On the doorstep of the Kahurangi National Park, as the warm spring sun blazed down, I took the short drive to the Karamea end of the Heaphy Track. A sublime little taster of one of our great walks can be enjoyed by taking the Nikau Grove walk. Starting from the gnarly old swingbridge that traverses the Kohaihai River, the 40min walk ushers you into a lush heart-stealing forest of palms, headlined by thousands of Nikau palms. Close to the Heaphy Track car
park, McCallum’s Mill Rd is the route you’ll need to take. This old logging road, narrow, steep, unsealed and winding, is not for the faint-hearted. But the 15km ordeal is undeniably worth it. From the car park, an easy 45min return leads you to the biggun attraction, the Oparara Arch, New Zealand’s largest natural arch, spanning 200m and 37m. It’s a celestial spectacle, dry and roomy inside, with stalactites and stalagmites. This glorious limestone creation towers above its namesake river, a tannin-stained body of water, which slinks through its wondrous limestone landscape.

Steamy play keeps audience guessing

A SHOW exploring sexual power play is bound to turn a few heads and the provocative, psychologically complex Venus in Fur does just that. Each detail of the show is refined down to perfection – the two stars, Daniel Watterson and Jessie Lawrence, didn’t miss a beat and the lighting was perfectly choreographed to convey its dark, sultry scenes. Even the old audition room set was clever, complete with props of past shows performed at The Court Theatre featuring on the stage. But I could not help walking away slightly overwhelmed by the in depth, complicated messages the show was trying to convey. It was a battle between who is dominate and who is submissive, what is real and what is not. A play within a play, it aims to blur the lines of reality and fantasy between a playwright and an actress who become caught
However, I felt the show was perplexing – to have an actress come in, know every line of the play off by heart, seduce the playwright, criticise it for victimising women, then tie up the playwright forcing him to scream “all hail Aphrodite” was a lot to take in. There wasn’t a moment in the show when you’re not wondering what will happen next – but in a society where sadomasochism is often unacceptable, you may walk away perplexed by its intellectual message. Were the characters supportive of sexual sadomasochism or were they just exploring the idea? It was thought-provoking in exploring themes not commonly seen in Christchurch theatre, but definitely not a show for the whole family. •Venus in Fur runs at The Court Theatre until November 11. However, the show itself is more intellectual than visual, with dramatic themes rather than comedy. When the mysterious character Vanda appears and convinces Thomas to read with her, the sexual tension within the room
intensifies, leaving audiences wondering what will happen next. Lawrence’s performance as Vanda was fascinating to watch. Initially her character stumbles in as a dippy, scatterbrained actress with an over-the-top, loud voice anyone would love to hate. But the moment she begins to read her auditioning role, her entire persona transforms with her becoming a sophisticated, intense and powerful woman.
Lawrence captivates the audience with ease, drawing them in with her low, authoritative voice, before snapping back to being a ditsy actress. Her transformation was skilful and ensured everyone in the room was on the edge of their seats. Whenever Vanda transformed herself into character, it was clear Thomas, who was slowly sinking into a deep trance, was no longer in charge.

Being able to say he had built a house was something Adam Lord would not have dreamed of when he signed up to He Toki, Māori Trades Training at Ara in 2011. But this year working for McKenzie Builders, Adam has officially completed his first build. While Adam had been involved in previous building projects, this was his first time leading a house through the entire process. The house is located just outside of West Melton and was described as a tricky build by Adam. “The house was an architectural build that was to a very high standard. The house also had some very intricate design elements which made it tricky at times,” Adam says. “It was a big learning curve on this job, once you do an architectural build you realise how long all the final details can take.” “Having those house finishings done to perfection is the key thing to having a successful build and happy client. It just feels so rewarding to see it finished.” In 2011, Adam was one of the first students of He Toki, a post-earthquake initiative to train Māori for leadership positions in the rebuild of Christchurch. Since then, over 1200 people have completed pre-trades training qualifications. Adam says the He Toki programme helped him achieve his career. “While I was doing He Toki I was also given some work experience with McKenzie Builders and that helped me get where I am today,” he says.

“You just have to keep pushing and prove to them you can do the job.” Seeing Adam’s persistence, McKenzie Builders offered him an apprenticeship. He has since moved up the ranks to become a foreman. McKenzie Builders has been a great place to work and learn, he said. BMW M3 provides a spirited drive By Ross Kiddie MY PALMS are sweaty and I’m concentrating hard, I’ve been at warp speed through some of my favourite corners on a lonely high country road. I’ve been aware that the traction control light has been flickering as I punch out of each apex, I also notice that the same light flickers as I accelerate quickly when the road straightens out – second gear, third and fourth; as each gear is engaged I’m thinking that those big rear tyres are struggling to get the power down, even on a dry surface. This is the phenomenon that is one of the world’s most desirable sports sedans – BMW’s M3. It is immensely powerful, yet at the same time it is one of the most capable thrill machines. As my high country experience served to prove, the M3 is one of the most satisfying performance cars, it does everything so right and epitomises the MPower motorsport heritage that has made BMW’s performance arm a desirable choice. Based on the 3-Series, the M3 shares the traditional BMW way of manufacture, gone is the V8 engine from the previous generation, the new M3 returns with a straight-six engine, and it drives through a seven-step double clutch transmission through to the rear wheels. BMW rates the newcomer with massive power outputs – 317kW and 550Nm – and in true turbocharged style there is a broad spread of power – 5500rpm to 7300rpm and maximum torque from 1850rpm to 5500rpm. As these figures suggest, there is never a point where power wilts, and with solid throttle application it lunges under acceleration and does so with a thumping, throbbing sound that lets the driver know it is working hard but enjoying a workout at the same time. That’s the only sensation of speed, the speedometer rises quickly but such is the car’s overall capability it’s not always noticeable that the legal limit has way since passed, drivers best be aware that the M3 simply explodes to high speed. seems never-ending, it has a pull and inertia rush that is constantly enticing. In terms of figures, BMW claim a 250km/h top speed and a standstill to 100km/h time of 4.1sec. I didn’t want to stress the driveline verifying the latter, but I did record a 3sec overtaking time (80km/h to 120km/h). These are enviable times and don’t come at the cost of high fuel consumption, the M3 is also rated with an 8.3l/100km (34mpg) combined cycle fuel usage average. • Price – BMW M3, $159,500 • Dimensions – Length, 4671mm; width, 1877mm; height, 1430mm • Configuration – Sixcylinder, rear-wheeldrive, 2979cc, 317kW, 550Nm, seven-speed automatic. • Performance – 0-100km/h, 4.1sec • Fuel usage – 8.3l/100km
However, my spirited high country drive wasn’t kind to economy, the evaluation car returning to the dealership showing 10.6l/100km (27mpg). The M3 rides on a combination of tyres, Michelin up front and huge 275/35 x 19in sport specification Continental rubber on the rear; even though their size represents a wide footprint, the amount of power that is channelled in their direction means grip will be constantly challenged under load, and that’s where the traction control comes in. I left it activated all of the time, but you can release it in stages to promote an oversteer type of driving style. The M3 is almost perfectly weighted front to
rear; as a consequence, it feels neutral in a corner. The driver can select steering weight and suspension damping preferences, I mostly chose the standard sport setting which is firm but certainly not hard underneath. While the steering and suspension is exemplary, special mention must be made of the brakes, the M3 has immense stopping power, the pedal is constantly giving, and pressure to make them bite doesn’t need to be great. While the M3 is built to entertain and perform, it is also a docile car at city speed. Sure, the gearbox is structured so that it can handle that huge force of power with noticeable changes that aren’t perfectly smooth; however, that’s a small price, with the underlying performance aspect there has to be some trade-off. That aside, I was as comfortable in traffic in the M3 as I was on the open road, in comfort mode the suspension will soak up those badly battered humps on Christchurch’s streets, there is little indication of what lies underneath and what the result is if you decided to unleash the beast. At $159,500 the M3 provides realistic performance car value. It has been engineered as a serious car for the enthusiast, but with five seats it will also provide useful transport for when the family join in. It has been built to the 3-series values and has a layout familiar to that of any BMW, it is also comprehensively equipped and feels special to be behind the wheel of. If you take into account that there are also coupe and convertible options in M4 guise there are a wealth of choices.

Smith joins top flight of world darts By Gordon Findlater BERNIE SMITH will play darts on the world’s biggest stage after winning the Oceanic Masters in Dubbo, New South Wales. The win qualified the New Brighton Club player for the William Hill World Darts Championship in London next month, where he will play in front of a capacity crowd of 2500 at the Alexandra Palace and a worldwide television audience. The tournament has a total prize pool of just under $NZ3.5 million and the winner will collect more than $750,000. The 53-year-old defeated Gisborne’s Tahuna Irwin 6-5 in a nail-bitting final on Sunday at the Oceanic Masters to seal a spot in the sport’s biggest tournament. With the scores locked at five legs a piece, Smith came out firing with opening throws of 140 and 174 in the deciding leg. He then missed eight darts at the double and nearly let it slip as the thought of accomplishing a lifelong goal came within touching distance. “I scored really well but then I started thinking about it,” Smith said. “I just wanted it to go in; that’s all I was thinking about.” On his way to the final, Smith overcame Dave Marland, Kalani Hillman, reigning Oceanic

Smith grew up in a strong darting household – his father Henry and brother Lennie are also former national champions. After coming close to qualify-
ing for the biggest stage on a number of occasions, Smith was beginning to wonder if the dream would ever become a reality. “You start to think maybe not, but you give yourself another chance every time you compete in these things. I always knew I had a chance,” he said. Smith has had to put in the hard yards to achieve success.
He has boards in his living room and garage and throws for four hours a day on average. “I normally have a throw before I go to work and then I normally throw all night before I go to bed,” said Smith. Throwing darts at Alexandra Palace in front of thousands of screaming fans will be a whole new experience compared to the
New Zealand pub scene. However, Smith won’t be completely new to the big stage. He competed in the 2016 Auckland Darts Masters, where he was defeated by double world champion Gary Anderson in round one. Smith’s also a former national champion. The Auckland event, which has been running for three years, attracted more than 11,000 darts fans to Trusts Arena over three days last year. Smith says the rapid rise in popularity of the sport has had a flow on effect for the competitive element in New Zealand. “The last two or three years have been really tough. There’s a lot of young guys coming through and they’re playing so good. I’m probably playing the best I’ve ever played, but I’ve had to pick my game up big time,” said Smith. “Because of the coverage we have on TV, the young guys are really getting into darts.” A fan favourite at televised darts tournaments is the players’ walk-ons. Smith already has a Kiwi twist up his sleeve, which he hopes will go down well in London. “We’ve put a bit of Dave Dobbyn and Scribe together and it sounds pretty good,” he said. •The William Hill World Darts Championship will be held from December 14 to January 1.

Baxendale, 31, was named sportsperson of the year for the second time in his career, while the Halswell Hornets took out club of the year. titles with the club and two national premierships with the Canterbury Bulls. He led the Panthers to a 22-14 win in the major semi-final against the Linwood Keas. However, Baxendale’s overseas travel plans forced him to miss the grand-final loss to the Keas in August after the match was delayed by a week due to weather. “You hope that kind of thing doesn’t happen, but it happened, it was pretty stink,” he said.
